As regards his book 40 Hadith of Imam Nawawi, he can be quoted to have said "Everyone who desires and looks forward to the Hereafter must be familiar with these hadith because they cover the most important aspects of the religion and off er direction to all forms of obedience to Allah.
This is clear to anyone who ponders these hadith. I rely only upon Allah and I entrust my affair only to Him. To Him is all the Praise and grace, from Him is guidance and protection f rom error".
The commentaries on the hadith are by scholars of islam and this comments are based on Quran and Sunnah.
Hadith 1 of 40 Hadiths of Imam Nawawi
"Actions are (judged) by motives (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended. Thus, he whose migration (hijrah) was to Allah and His Messenger, his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; but he whose migration was for some worldly thing he might gain, or for a wife he might marry, his migration is to that for which he migrated." [Al-Bukhari & Muslim]
This Hadith was Narrated by Amirul Mu'minin, Abu Hafs 'Umar bin al-Khattab, (RA)
This was as a result of a man who migrated from Makkah to Medinah for the sole purpose of marrying a woman and not for the sake of Allah (swt)And his messenger (saw)
This Hadith helps a muslim evaluate and judge what one does and says in one's daily life
One earns reward with his heart, tongue and body cos intention is involved in all this three components
According to Ibn Tamiya, the scholars agreed that the place of intention is in the heart/conscience and not the tongue because making a statement is not the same as having an intention to do something,
Also, this Hadith tells us about the importance of doing good deeds solely for the sake of Allah (swt) ie sincerity to Allah(swt) in our deeds (Ikhlaas)
As Ikhlaas is one of the condition of acceptance of good deeds. Sincerity in our deeds needs to be protected cos we could get carried away by some things such as
Riya( Show off) eg doing things to impress or get attention from people around us eg during Salaat, trying to show people we know how to pray,
Hypocrisy,
Shrik, associating partners with Allah, (swt)
Committing sins,( this decreases our eeman)
In conclusion,
We can say from this Hadith that :
A person will achieve whatever he intended. If he intended good, good will come about. If he intended evil, evil will come about-that is, the result will be evil for him. If a person does a proper deed solely for the sake of Allah, his purpose would have been met and the deed would be accepted by Allah
Also,
This world and the opposite sex in particular are two aspects that drive a person to perform certain deeds. They can have great influences over a person, to the extent that one may even perform noble deeds not for the sake of Allah but for their sake.
